Osteopathy is an allied health service that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders. They use a combination of manual therapy and exercises to treat a wide range of conditions, including back pain, neck pain, headaches, and sports injuries. Osteopaths are trained to identify and treat the underlying cause of pain, rather than just treating the symptoms.
Osteopathy, chiropractic, and physiotherapy are all disciplines that focus on the diagnosis and treatment of muscle and skeletal disorders. Osteopaths use a holistic approach that targets the musculoskeletal system as well as the nervous, lymphatic and circulatory systems to help reduce and manage symptoms. Chiropractors focus on the spine and the nervous system, using adjustments to improve function and relieve pain. Physiotherapists use a variety of techniques, including exercises, massage, and electrical stimulation, to improve movement and reduce pain. All three disciplines can play an important role in maintaining musculoskeletal health.
You do not need a referral to see an osteopath in Australia. You can self-refer or be referred by your GP, specialist, or another health professional. All practicing Osteopaths are registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
Osteopathy is covered by most private health insurance policies in Australia. Private health insurance rebate levels vary, so check with your insurer prior to your consultation. For chronic conditions a Medicare rebate can be accessed under the Chronic Disease Management Plan for up to 5 visits a year, talk to your GP to discuss eligibility.
At your first appointment, you can expect to be asked questions in relation to your pain or current injury, previous injuries and illnesses. Your osteopath will assess your injury with a range of diagnostic tests which may include assessment of active and passive movements and strength testing. Treatment will include a range of techniques tailored to your presentation including massage, stretching, dry needling, cupping, mobilisations and manipulations. Your Osteopath will aim to communicate with you clearly and educate you on your injury, strategies to reduce symptoms, rehabilitation exercises to perform at home and outline a treatment plan. If you have any questions during your treatment or afterward we are happy to help.
The number of treatments that you will need is dependent on a number of factors, including the nature and severity of your injury, your age, and your overall health. Osteopaths will work with you to develop a treatment plan that meets your specific needs.
